CAWS mask
2023

In the project, we were asked to choose an item and imagine where it might be in the future. I chose an eye mask and noticed several signals indicating an increasing desire for disconnection.
I decided to design something related to extreme situations.

I reasearch back in time to a moment of crisis and arrived in Italy during the Black Plague, which killed 50% of the population. The practice of isolating people arriving by ship on an island for 40 days also became more prevalent, giving rise to the term "quarantine." My main inspiration is the plague doctor—he treated the sick, educated against disconnection and ignorance, and was nicknamed "Black Death." People feared seeing him, as he was perceived as a harbinger of death and has since become a cultural icon.

Using iconic characters from movies or series as symbols in protests and real-life situations is a powerful way to convey criticism and messages. This trend is expected to grow, with more people adopting avatars as a means of expressing their identities and viewpoints in the future.

I decided to renew the mask and create a future projection of it. The character role is to appear before the masses ahead of major disasters, to wake everyone up and put a spotlight on society's problems. Just like in the past, where the plague doctor was not only a healer but also an educator, encouraging people to believe in medicine and face their challenges, today we all know that the world is deteriorating in certain areas, and we're not doing much to change the situation. That's why we need the figure of the plague doctor.

As I've seen in environmental protests, young people are leading the way,
so I adapted the style to suit a younger audience.
